The Carol Kimmelman Sports and Academic Campus

The Kimmelman Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization, is spearheading development of a world-class sports and academic center that combines exceptional athletic facilities with comprehensive academic and enrichment services for underserved youth in the Los Angeles region.

Carol’s days of teaching elementary school in South L.A. shaped her desire to create better opportunities for kids in need in this area. This center will combine her passion for education and athletics in creating a safe place where kids can learn important life lessons both in the classroom and on the tennis courts, soccer fields and other athletic facilities. Teamwork, hard work, fair play and focus are all values that defined Carol, and they will be core to this center.

The Project

The Carol Kimmelman Sports and Academic Campus is envisioned to be a world-class sports and academic center that combines exceptional athletic facilities with comprehensive academic and enrichment services for underserved youth in Carson and the entire Los Angeles region. The project includes two core components:

  • A Learning Center with extensive classroom space and experienced staff to provide free homework and counseling support; and
  • Outstanding tennis and other sports facilities for all ages and skill levels.

The vision is to provide access to these programs at low or no cost to underserved youth from Carson and surrounding communities.

In November 2017, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with the Kimmelman Foundation to pursue the plan that will transform an approximately 87-acre portion of the county-owned Victoria Golf Course in Carson. The Foundation looks forward to the County-led approval process unfolding over the next year.
